Endorsements to Ban Plastic Bags

Groups and Businesses Speak Out for Washington's Wildlife

Organizations and businesses across the state of Washington have spoken out in support of a ban on plastic bags. Bag bans help protect wildlife and are not necissary to doing business in Washington. It's time to ban the bag.

Report

Dear Legislator,

We, the undersigned organizations and businesses, are writing to express our strong support for a ban on disposable plastic bags within the state of Washington.

We know that plastic bags threaten our wildlife. Whales, seals, and salmon can choke on them, ingest them, or be harmed by their toxins. We saw the effects of this in 2010 when a beached gray whale was found in West Seattle with twenty plastic bags in its stomach. This is just wrong. Nothing we use for a few minutes should end up in the belly of a whale.

Washingtonians value the unique creatures that live in our very special places, especially our waterways. From Puget Sound to the Lake Chelan, the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Columbia River, Washington’s waterways are home to amazing wildlife that all Washingtonians should take care of.

Sadly, Washington uses over 2 billion bags a year, and sadly, over 95% of them will end up as litter and in our landfills, making their way to Puget Sound and our waterways, threatening our wildlife. We cannot recycle our way out of this problem. Despite efforts to expand recycling programs, only about 4% of disposable plastic bags are recycled nation-wide.

We have a serious plastic problem that we need to address, and banning plastic bags is an obvious, easy, and significant first step to take. With so many people bringing their own reusable bags, these plastic bags are unnecessary.

Our behalf of the thousands of Washingtonians who we represent and serve, we urge you to ban plastic bags within the state of Washington. This is a critical step to protect our wildlife.
