Overview
Despite years of debate over tranportation, we still spend too much time stuck in traffic, dirty air harms our health and environment, and some of our most heavily-traveled highways and bridges still need to be replaced.
The average Puget Sound commuter loses more than 50 hours a year—six working days—because of traffic congestion. And rush hour is getting longer. In 1982 our roads were congested for 4.6 hours over the course of the day, but by 2001 roads were congested for 7.4 hours every day.
Health And Environment At Risk: Automobiles produce an estimated 60 percent of Washington's air pollution. In King County, 10 percent of children and seven percent of adults have asthma. Over the last 10 years, childhood hospitalization rates have increased by 53 percent, even as overall childhood hospitalization rates have decreased.
