OLYMPIA—By a vote of 85-13, the Washington House of Representatives passed legislation to make certain appliances and machinery sold in Washington more energy efficient. The bill, ESHB 1062, establishes minimum efficiency standards on 12 appliances not already covered by federal efficiency standards. Seattle—Washington’s increasing dependence on natural gas will leave consumers and the state susceptible to steadily rising electricity prices, mixed with periodic price spikes, and an unstable energy supply, according to a new report by the Washington Public Interest Research Group Foundation (WashPIRG Foundation). The report, Predictably Unpredictable: Volatility in Future Energy Supply and Price from Over-Dependence on Natural Gas, shows that energy efficiency measures can reduce the state’s need for electricity and its vulnerability to unstable electricity prices and natural gas supply, while renewable energy can provide electricity at low and stable prices. This January, the Washington State Legislature will be considering a bill that would increase the use of efficiency and renewable energy to meet our future energy needs, moving us towards a more reliable and stable energy supply.

OLYMPIA—In a campus-wide referendum that ended last week, The Evergreen State College students voted to offset the campus' electricity use with energy from clean renewable sources such as wind and solar power. A new student fee of $1 per credit will pay for the purchase of Green Tags (renewable energy certificates) equal to the amount of electricity used by the campus each year. Green Tags, often sold by electric utility companies such as Puget Sound Energy, are a way of subsidizing the production of renewable energy. The students overwhelmingly supported the initiative by a vote of 1102 to 112.
