What's New
Last February, Gov. Gregoire issued an Executive Order calling on Washington to reduce its global warming pollution.
Right now the Legislature is discussing how we can cut our pollution, and Environment Washington is backing three bills:
• The Climate Action Bill,
• The Green Jobs Bill,
• The Local Solutions to Global Warming Bill, and
• The Energy Efficiency Bill.
Brief Summary
More and more Washingtonians are concerned about what global warming will mean for the health and well-being of future generations.
The good news is that we can do something bout global warming, using tools that already exist. But the longer we wait, the worse the effects will be. We’re urging the Governor and legislators to support measures that will set state caps and establish a timeline to reduce global warming pollution; require local governments to take climate impacts into account when updating land use plans; and measures to promote more energy efficiency.
Here's a rundown on what we're throwing our weight behind:
The Climate Action bill would slash our carbon pollution from the main culprits—energy production, transportation, building operations and other sources in the state. The bill also gives the state the authority to enforce these new limits.
The Local Solution to Global Warming bill adds to the state’s Growth Management Act. The bill would reduce pollution from transportation, the biggest source of global warming pollution in Washington, by ensuring we build more walkable, transit-oriented communities.
The Green Jobs, and Energy Efficiency bills: These measures include specific provisions to train workers for a green economy – jobs in energy efficiency contracting, renewable energy development and green building engineering.
